The holiday season is a great time for visiting friends and family. Unfortunately, it can also be a dangerous time to be on the road.
Car crashes result in many injuries and deaths every year. When driving during busy travel times, keep a few safety tips in mind to help ensure you have a safe journey.
1. Do not drive under the influence
Holidays are a prime time for parties. If you choose to enjoy alcoholic beverages, stay out of the driver’s seat. Encourage your friends and family to do the same. Planning an overnight stay or assigning a designated driver can save lives.
2. Check weather conditions
Christmas, Thanksgiving and other holidays that fall in the winter result in some of the worst combinations of heavy traffic and bad weather. Check the weather before you leave and make sure you prepare your vehicle to handle snowstorms or similar conditions.
3. Do not speed or drive aggressively
There is no denying that the holidays can be stressful, and heavy traffic is especially aggravating. However, even if you are running behind, resist the urge to speed. Speeding results in thousands of deadly crashes each year. If others around you drive aggressively, give them space and keep yourself safe.
A little extra attentiveness helps keep you safe when driving during times of heavy traffic. Unfortunately, you can not predict what other drivers around you will do. If you do find yourself in a car accident, stay calm, document the scene and seek medical attention for any injuries.
