One of the most important things that drivers can do is to watch vehicles ahead of them that are waiting to turn left. Be very aware that these vehicles may be one of the greatest dangers that you face on the road. Left turns cause an incredible amount of serious car accidents every year.
For example, there are reports that many delivery companies will ask their drivers not to turn left. When programming a route into a GPS unit, they would prefer that the driver takes a longer way around, turning right three times to arrive at the same destination. This does take longer, but the odds of an accident during a left turn are so much higher that it’s just not worth the risk.
A major risk for motorcyclists
One area in which this presents an even higher level of danger is with motorcyclists. Many times, drivers who are going to turn left will not see motorcycles approaching them. Or, even if they do see them and those motorcycles aren’t hidden in traffic, drivers may assume that they are farther away or that they are moving slowly.
But when the driver turns at the wrong time in front of a motorcyclist, that motorcyclist has very few options to avoid a crash. The whole incident can happen in a split second. The motorcyclist can’t break fast enough, and there’s nowhere to swerve unless they want to drive into the oncoming traffic lanes – which is never advisable.
